Payroll Deduction Through United Way
By Debby Burnett

If you work for a company in either Massachusetts or Rhode Island that does payroll deduction for United Way of Southeastern New England you can give to Forever Paws through payroll deduction. Each month we receive $533.40 thanks to generous supporters from places like Newport Hospital, Raytheon, Hodges Badge and Lifespan. This money helps enormously to pay for things such as veterinary bills and medicine for our sickest animals. This is money we can count on each month so funds from other fundraisers can go to things like spaying and neutering our animals prior to adoption.

Unfortunately, United Way of Greater Fall River chooses not to help any animal or environmental organizations. Our appeal to them last month yielded nothing more than to expose their narrow perspective on workplace giving. They only have 35 organizations on their list and they failed to reach their goals for this year. Little wonder. We hope they will one day expand their horizons. In the meantime, check with your Human Resources Department at work and if you belong to United Way of SENE -- you simply write in our address of 300 Lynwood Drive, Fall River, MA 02721. . We get every cent you donate and the animals greatly appreciate your help.

How Much Does it Cost to Run Forever Paws?
By Christopher Burnett, Chief Financial Officer

Most people are surprised to learn of the enormous effort and expenses volunteers running an animal shelter have to face. Before you read any further, close your eyes and try to estimate how much you think it cost to keep Forever Paws open during February 2002. If you guessed $11,651.29 you were right. Here is a breakdown of our expenses for that month:

Gas & Electric 963.39

Veterinary Expenses including vaccinations 1,399.69

Fire & Burglar Alarm 34.95

Telephone lines & Long Distance 220.11

Office & Kennel Supplies 365.49

Payroll Expenses 5,388.27

Trash Collection 144.79

Spay/Neuter 564.60

Legal Fees (Lawyer to fight eviction) 550.00

Rent (Pro-rated following court settlement) 1,060.00

Insurance (Pro-rated) 110.00

Advertising, printing & trade shows 850.00

$11,651.29

Our Board of Directors and other volunteers work hard to negotiate the best fees possible for our shelter and are constantly evaluating where and how we can best spend our money to benefit the animals. As you can see, your donations are essential to the lives of these homeless creatures. If people would only take proper care of their animals and take responsibility for them, none of this would be necessary!
